E. Daniel Arey — Entrepreneur, lifelong learner

Some people find their calling. Dan Arey keeps discovering new ones. Writer, Designer, Creative Director, Inventor, Musician, Transmedia Alchemist. The through-line only becomes visible in retrospect. A career that spans billion-dollar entertainment franchises, classified intelligence programs, university lecture halls, comic book publishing, augmented reality breakthroughs, and AI innovation doesn’t look like a plan. It looks like an adventure through the dreams of possibility. Until you realize it was all preparation meets opportunity.

The Storyteller

Dan Arey is the creator of Uncharted, the action-adventure franchise he conceived, wrote, and directed at Naughty Dog. He created Nathan Drake, built the world, and shaped the narrative voice that would sell over 57 million copies, generate nearly $2 billion in revenue, and earn the franchise’s place as one of the most critically acclaimed in entertainment history, eventually spawning the movie starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.

Before that, he wrote and directed Jak and Daxter as Creative Director and Designer, and on the mega-hit and Sony mascot franchise Crash Bandicoot. His team was the first American based team to achieve a million units of sales in Japan. Asia loved Crash, and even had a bullet train design with Crash riding the front. His tenure at Naughty Dog resulted in nine platinum titles in a row. A record at Sony. He later joined Blizzard Entertainment as a franchise world builder on Overwatch, where he created foundational characters and lore alongside Chris Metzen. In the process of these hits, he earned a Writers Guild of America membership, a credential shared by a handful of interactive creators worldwide. He didn’t just design games. He wrote and directed stories, built worlds, and shaped how millions of people experience narrative and new media.

The Innovator

At Google, Dan joined Niantic Labs and served as Lead Designer on Ingress, inventing an entirely new category of entertainment: location-based gaming. That work became the foundation for Pokémon GO, which Dan helped design at Google. It went on to become the most successful mobile game ever made. Over $9 billion in lifetime revenue, and still going strong a decade later. More than a billion downloads. It took down Google Cloud twice! On every pop culture radar from Good Morning America to late night TV, Pokémon became something everyone talked about in 2016. It drove an estimated 144 billion additional steps of physical activity in the first 30 days of release in the U.S. alone! (To put that into perspective, those steps are 38 to 40 round trips from Earth to Pluto! Add worldwide totals, and that’s a lot of human health and endorphins!) As Dan smiles with a wink, “Real world games have real world benefits!” Pokémon GO sent people into parks, connecting them in their neighborhoods, at landmarks, and across communities they had never explored. It wasn’t a game people played on their phones. It was a game they played with each other, out in the real world, proving that technology could move human beings, literally, into their surroundings. Any location could become sticky if it had social energy.

At Niantic, Dan Arey also contributed to a Blue Sky augmented reality project with Walt Disney Imagineering, exploring how AR could transform physical spaces into layered storytelling environments. The intersection of Disney’s world-building legacy and Niantic’s location technology was exactly the kind of collision that produces breakthroughs.

The Strategist

What most people don’t know is that Dan’s career has a multi-modal track far from the entertainment industry.

He also contributed to DARPA research programs and served on the SHARP (Summer Hard Problem) initiative for the Director of National Intelligence, working alongside analysts from many agencies on classified national security challenges. He has participated in Washington think tanks, and worked with USC’s Institute for Creative Technologies (ICT).

He also contributed to Polyplexus, a DARPA-funded interdisciplinary innovation platform that connected over 6,500 expert researchers across intelligence and defense agencies, generating thousands of cross-domain insights. One of the first “particle collider for ideas,” and a direct intellectual ancestor of RenAGI’s Idea Collider. That project taught Dan something critical: the biggest breakthroughs don’t come from deeper expertise. They come from connecting different experts with first principle science and conjecture-based rigor.

The Educator
Dan Arey spent eleven years on the faculty at the University of Southern California, teaching across three separate schools: the School of Cinematic Arts (consistently ranked the world’s top film school), the Robert Zemeckis Center for Digital Arts, and the Viterbi School of Engineering. Very few faculty members teach across two schools. Teaching across three, spanning storytelling, media theory, and engineering, is almost unheard of. It is the O-Shape made academic.

He also developed creative and technology education programs for the Orange County School of the Arts (OCSA) and other forward-focused institutions, bringing interdisciplinary thinking into K-12 classrooms. The question that drove his teaching was always the same one that drives RenAGI: how do you help someone learn without feeling the weight of it? How can you accelerate learning like he accelerated walking and health in Pokémon GO? “By hiding the broccoli.” How can these endeavors help people, young and old, see new connections between fields that everyone else treats as separate?

The Creator

Arey’s creative life extends beyond screens. He is the creator of Sword of the Apocalypse, a comic series blending historical fiction with speculative mythology. Bombshell, the life and spycraft of Marilyn Monroe. And Hindsight, a historical mystery about the power of photonic time lattices. As a trained musician, a visual artist, and a lifelong student of disciplines ranging from martial arts to philosophy to architectural design, Dan doesn’t collect hobbies, he collects lenses with which to see the world anew.

The Convergence

Every chapter of Dan Arey’s career pointed to this new age of Artificial General Intelligence, and the Massive Transformative Purpose this catalyzes.

The storytelling taught him how humans absorb meaning. The world-building taught him how systems create emergent experiences. The intelligence work taught him how cross-domain synthesis solves problems that single-domain expertise cannot. The education taught him how people actually learn, and how rarely the system helps them discover their own polymathic potential. Music, writing, and art taught him the language of emotion, and the deeper meaning between the notes and the words. Location-based gaming taught him that technology can physically move people into new territory. The AI work showed him that the tools finally exist to make personalized, cross-domain learning real.

RenAGI is the convergence of it all.

The thesis is simple and backed by a career that has lived it: the most important breakthroughs happen in the dance of the froth between domains. Where the fish, who eventually grows legs and lungs, first meets the shore. Leonardo da Vinci, Nikola Tesla, Richard Feynman, and Steve Jobs were not specialists. They were polymaths. And every one of them had to build their own map.

RenAGI helps people build that map for themselves.

Dan Arey didn’t set out to become a polymath. He just kept following the collisions and the magic of discovery. RenAGI is the map he wished he’d had. Now he wants to share it with you.

As he says, “The next RenAIssance won’t start in Florence. It will start within each of us. Building a better future, one new thinker at a time.”

A FOUNDER’S NOTE

A better world begins with better thinkers.

RenAGI begins with a simple conviction: human potential expands when curiosity can move freely across disciplines. The work is an invitation to bring more of yourself to every question — your knowledge, imagination, discernment, and care.

E. Daniel Arey founded RenAGI to make that breadth more accessible: a living companion for people who want to keep learning, connect the unexpected, and cultivate a life of meaningful range.
