E. Daniel Arey

E. Daniel Arey began his career at twenty in Hewlett-Packard and NEC chip fabrication clean rooms and early PC manufacturing while still in college, grounding him in engineering and systems thinking before he ever touched a game controller.

He is the creator of Uncharted, the billion-dollar franchise he conceived and directed at Naughty Dog, selling over 57 million copies, generating nearly $2 billion in revenue, and spawning the feature film starring Tom Holland and Mark Wahlberg.

As Creative Director and Lead Designer, he led Jak and Daxter and the Crash Bandicoot franchise, where his team became the first American studio to sell a million units in Japan. At Blizzard Entertainment, he served as a franchise World Builder on Overwatch alongside Chris Metzen. Nine platinum titles in a row, a record at Sony. These weren’t just project credits. They were full-spectrum Creative Direction: game systems design, world architecture, art direction, sound design, and the engineering of interactive experience at scale.

At Google, he joined Niantic Labs as Lead Designer on Ingress, helping invent an entirely new category of geospatial gaming. That work became the foundation for Pokémon GO, which he helped create with The Pokémon Company, and it became the most successful mobile launch ever, with over $9+ billion in lifetime revenue and more than a billion downloads.

Concurrently, Dan spent twelve years on the faculty at USC, teaching across three schools: School of Cinematic Arts, the Robert Zemeckis Center for Digital Arts, and the Viterbi School of Engineering. Very few faculty teach across two schools. Teaching across three, spanning creative design, media theory, and engineering, is the method embodied in RenAGI.

Dan also led projects for DARPA, served on the SHARP initiative for the Director of National Intelligence, working real-world projects alongside analysts from various agencies nationally and around the world. Polyplexus is a DARPA-funded interdisciplinary platform connecting over 7,500 engineers and researchers across the world to accelerate cross-domain breakthroughs. It was a powerful example of what is happening today, but predates AI’s ability to make it faster and more personal. Now this concept becomes rocket fuel for faster innovation.

Beyond screens, Dan is also a comic book creator and writer, a member of the Writers Guild of America, a musician and songwriter, visual artist, and a lifelong practitioner across disciplines from martial arts to philosophy to architectural design. A polymath by practice, not principle.

Altogether, Dan has worked in four layers of the AI tech stack: chip manufacturing, circuit boards and personal computers, mobile apps, and wearable tech, including VR and XR glasses.
